what is jiu jitsu?
Jiu jitsu is a physical and mental discipline that provides effective self defence and self development. It is a traditional Japanese martial art that has been tried and tested over many hundreds of years, with a wide variety of techniques which rely on the principles of softness, compliance and flexibility. Today it is found in many self-defence and restraint techniques used by police and armed forces the world over, and is the basis of the physical skills taught in most self-defence courses. It takes a rational approach to the way the body works and how to make the best use of your size and strength when dealing with an attacker.
what is the Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu Association?
The Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu Association was formally created in 1995 with the merger of two Associations which held broadly the same aims: to serve their members, so they can develop their skill in jiu jitsu. They also had the goal of providing all the support that clubs require, like grading events, courses and insurance, at a minimal cost.
do I have to be a university student?
No. Anyone is welcome to come and train with us, although annual membership charges may be higher for anyone who is not a student at Cardiff University. These charges are imposed by the Athletic Union and are there to provide insurance cover for everyone.
how much does it cost?
Training sessions typically cost £2 for ~2 hours, with an annual club membership charge of £5 (for university students). Courses and sessions taught by visiting instructors may cost more. Non-Students are welcome but have to pay additional fees set by the Athletic Union to become a member.
You will also need to purchase a Gi (training suit) after a couple of weeks, but these are usually available at a reduced cost through the club. We do not expect anyone to purchase before they begin training.
Other costs include an annual license from the Aiuchi Assoc. and grading fees
how old do I have to be?
Anyone under the age of 18 will need to talk to the club instructors before joining, to ensure that we can comply to the Child Protection Act. As long as you are over 18 there's no upper age limit (One of members is over 75 years old and was awarded his blue belt in April 2006)
